Serial ATA - or simply SATA - is the hard disk standard created to replace the parallel ATA interface, a.k.a. IDE. SATA provides a transfer rate of 150 MB/s or 300 MB/s against of a 133 MB/s maximum using the previous technology.

Serial ATA is a replacement for 40 way IDE cable, the SATA connector and cable are smaller (which improves air circulation. SATA cables have an L shape connector. SATA cable allows for easier board routing. Connect high speed Serial ATA device to a Serial ATA Controller. Connects a SATA Hard Disk/DVD-RW to a SATA motherboard. Supports speeds 1.5Gbit/sec & 3Gbit/sec (SATA II). This is not an eSATA cable.
